A Talk on “Ethical Hacking”

As we thrive to improve our teams’ programming skills in order to better serve our clients, we have started inviting technology leaders in our community and those visiting Rwanda, to come and lecture on topics that are, of critical expediency, today. It was in this regard that last Friday, the WiredIn teams were fortunate enough to host Mr. Howdy Price, a software engineer, tech entrepreneur, and the co-founder of Cardinal Peak, a 100+ person software engineering company based in Colorado U.S.A, that designs and builds products in the audio/video and IoT markets. Mr. Price holds a B.S. in Mathematics and Professional Writing from Carnegie Mellon University and is currently a visiting instructor at CMU-Africa, in Kigali, Rwanda. Mr. Price’s lecture was on “Hashing and Message Authentication”, and the lecture revolved around the need for software engineers to put thinking about security at the forefront of their planning and designs.

At WiredIn, this topic occupies a very important place as this is a key requirement that often comes up with many of our clients, who are not looking at only a working application and robust application, but one that will give them the confidence that their customers’ data and access are secured following security and privacy best practices. So staying current on this kind of topic is very important to us.

The lecture was referred to as “Ethical Hacking”, understanding how hackers have managed to take over whole systems and customers login credentials by taking advantage of known theoretical weaknesses in some of the widely used Hashing Functions. For instance realizing that the SHA-1 function has had known weaknesses since 1998, and that by 2017 this Hashing function had already been broken, would make our engineers think twice before using it again in securing some of our clients’ most critical software applications.

As the first of many, we are planning a once-a-month lecture, on leading technology topics of the day.

Made in Rwanda – Murakoze New Version Released.

Murakoze project just released a new version of the device, made in Rwanda. The previous version released in 2018, has been a kickstart for the project and paved the way for the new version with new features and new design. The new model includes a new design of the device, a smartphone app that can also be used to rate services, new look and design for the website and customer’s analysed reports’ dashboard.

1. Device Updates

  • Shape

The Murakoze device now has a compact design thanks to the precision in the placement of every component to optimize the available space inside the enclosure.

  • Battery

The device now features a battery and can still work if a blackout occurs.

  • Lighting

The device has a notification light bar that illuminates in a color that corresponds to the color of the pressed button. This confirms to the customer that her/his rating has been received successfully.

2. Smartphone App (New)

  • Rating

Murakoze Mob App can let a user rate a subscribed institution service,  this will let the institution know how their service is good to a user. 

  1. Locate nearby murakoze subscribers

This feature lets a user see on the home screen which institution’s services are nearby his/her location.

3. Customer’s dashboard Updates

  1. Improved Customer Reports
  • Filtering feature to get reports in details
  • Graphical representation of weekly, monthly and Yearly.
  • The number of people participated hourly, weekly and monthly in rating categories of Excellent, Good and Bad.
  • It will be better to show this info as a notification after a user is logged in or send a notification email.
  • Real-time notification on consecutive bad feedbacks
  • Key performance indicator reports that include Net Promoter and Customer Satisfaction Scores

Participation to The D2Rwanda Study project

In Spring 2017, WiredIn worked on mobile app development for the D2Rwanda Study (which stands for Digital Diabetes Study in Rwanda) project developed and conducted by Aarhus University (AU) and the University of Luxembourg (UL) under the auspices of the University of Rwanda and Rwanda Biomedical Centre. The project aims to determine the efficiency of HBCPs programme and mobile health application in responding to solve the problem of mismatch of doctors and nurses to diabetes patients in Rwanda (Ref: LINK).

WiredIn was involved in the development of the mobile app call Nyitaho and development of a web-based system that enables nurses and HBCPs (Home-Based Care Practitioner) to study, to arrange appointments, to insert clinical and laboratory results and also update current medications.

‘Ohereza’, one of 5 teams to make it to the pitching event round of ‘Innovating Mobility Ideathon’ by Toyota Mobility Foundation and Impact Hub Kigali

‘Innovating Mobility Ideathon’ organized by Toyota Mobility Foundation and Impact Hub Kigali took place from Aug. 29th to Sept. 3rd, 2018, in Kigali. The event called for novel and innovative ideas and solutions to enable efficient transportation of goods and people. This event joined 15 teams that competed for 5 available spots in the final pitching event. The ultimate winner is to win $10,000 as first prize.

Team Ohereza from WiredIn Ltd. participated in this event to present an idea with the name of Ohereza. Ohereza is a courier delivery platform. It is an online marketplace connection using web-based technology that will connect transporters, businesses, and courier senders. Ohereza’s software permits courier senders to post the goods to be delivered. Once such posts are made, Ohereza software notifies registered transporters that a delivery opportunity is available and the Ohereza software facilitates completion of the delivery.

Ohereza was developed by a WiredIn Ltd.’s employee while they were on an internship program in Japan under ABE Initiative Scholarship at Rexvirt Communication Ltd., WiredIn Ltd.’s group company in Japan.

Ohereza guaranteed its one spot out of the available 5 in the final pitch which took place on Oct. 16th,, 2018. The final results are still yet to be announced but until then our Ohereza team remains hopeful to take home the first prize.
